The last few months have
been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for local web site ‘ This Is
Ashford’. Updating and actively promoting the site had to virtually
stop following a legal challenge, over the use of its domain and its
branding, from a leading newspaper group who are part of glabal media
group Associated Newspapers. Gary Coleman, member of the ThisisAshford
team said, ‘ Out of the blue we received a solicitors letter demanding
that we give up our domain name and cease promotion of our site within
seven days or else. It immediately felt like we were being frightened
off by the use of big boy bully tactics. Having kept an eye on various
legal cases involving the Internet previously, we were confident we
could successfully defend ourselves, although it was a bit worrying that
when we initially sought professional legal advice, apart from a few
specialist firms, help and more importantly knowledge of Internet law
appeared very thin on the ground. However, we put our case across and
after much tooing and froing with their solicitors they finally relented
and withdrew any further action. We even managed to get them to review
their own internal policies regarding Internet law.’
‘ You do have to be so careful these days as the legal side of the
Internet is still relatively new and many of the boundaries are still
being set.’
But the web sites good fortune hasn’t stopped there. It’s success
had already been spotted by Kent’s leading, and fastest growing,
online and offline business and leisure directory -
Kenttodo.com. And,
following discussions, ThisIsAshford was acquired and has now been
incorporated within the company. ‘This is really great news for us. As
well as increasing traffic to the site still further, it means that our
profile and that of Ashford itself will be raised. We also now have long
term security which will allow us to continue to develop what the site
offers. Of course the focus of the site, which is to promote the
benefits of Ashford as well as becoming a community portal, will remain
unchanged.’
