Leisure
Spotlight This
is Ashford's leisure spotlight focuses on something leisure,
something local,
to do with Ashford and the surrounding area. This time we feature
Ashford Rugby Club.
Formed
in 1887 and with over 800 members, the club is situated just off
junction 9 of the M20.
We consider ourselves to be a forward thinking club who are trying
to improve our game within the
constraints we have to work with and are always looking for new (and
older players) of any ability.
We
run 4 senior mens teams, with the occasional vets team and have
recently formed an U19s team that
is going from strength to strength. Our Ladies have 1 senior team
and are actively trying to form an U19s
team. With regards to Youth rugby with run at every age group bar
under 15s this season and at Mini
level we have teams in every age group and in certain age group we
are able to put out two sides.
The
clubhouse and grounds are situated on Kinneys Rd (Off Canterbury
Rd), where we have 4 full size flat
pitches of which two are fully floodlit. To use the beer advert
phrase, they are "probably the best pitches
in Kent". I think it is fair to say that our 3rd and 4th XV
pitches are equal to most 1st XV pitches across
the county. All this is due in no small part to Life Vice President
of the club Bryan Judges and his firm.
You
will always be met on entrance to the club warmly by our Bar Steward
Vicky Norman and her team
behind the bar, who are always eager to help if they can. The
kitchen is open on most match days and
are renowned for their excellent catering. Why don't you come down
and give us a "try" (sorry about the
pun), whether it be as a supporter, player or just for a drink, you
will always be made to feel welcome.
Lastly,
it seems the senior men's team have been posing for the 2010 Rugby
Club calender recently.
We'll try and let you know when it's available.
